Redrump gets a grandstand seat
Maj. Cleveland-Suede of British Intelligence, stationed at HQ at Grand Beuverie, puffed his pipe, before removing it from his mouth and taking a sip of gin and tonic. He gazed down his immaculately pressed trousers, past his highly glossed boots, to his batman, Ronny Redrump.
Redders was looking a little excited, and kept looking out the window. "Sir, I'm sure them's not British planes, them's German".
Cleveland-Suede rolled his eyes towards the ceiling. "Johnny Boche might buzz us one day, but he's not likely to do it two days running. It would be jolly bad form; upset the Generals croquet match and all."
He squinted past the lace curtains, out of the window. Aah! There was an SE5a, probably Binky's.
Bit of an odd shape for a SE5a...
and had crosses on it...
and it was painted shocking pink...
"Damnation, Redders! It's the Pink Baron. Where's my blunderbuss? Let's see how he copes with a barrel-full of my Aunt Clarice's mint imperials!"
Whilst Cleveland-Suede rummidged around in a cupboard for his blunderbuss, Redrump quietly climbed out the window onto the roof of the first floor of HQ. He tiptoed away from the window and sat down on the cushion he had thoughtfully brought with him. Leaning back against a wall, he lit a woodbine, took a puff, and relaxed to watch the show.
Four German aircraft were approaching from the east, two two-seaters and off to their flanks two fighters, one of them painted a somewhat effeminate pink. All four were heading directly towards him.
Shouting down below attracted his attention. The General and his aids had dropped their croquet mallets and were running away from the croquet lawn in all directions. This noise was augmented by the AA gunners who were beginning to fire at the Germans, supported by the occasional crack from Cleveland-Suede's blunderbuss.
The archie fire didn't appear to deter the Germans at all. How boring, thought Redrump.
But then the Germans began to turn as two Sopwith Camels came into view to the north, and to the south an SE5a and somewhat behind that an RE8.
It was looking as if it was going to get more interesting, thought Redrump as he lit another woodbine.

The confusion of battle
Ivan Schitter could finally make out the target “target slightly to our left Heinz, better get ready, scan the skies, I’m going to fall in behind Klaus & Willi and follow them in” Heinz made sure that the gun was ready and started to scan for planes “okay Ivan good luck to us eh?”
After a short while Heinz spotted the British planes “they must of known we were coming Ivan, there are four of them!” Ivan looked left and right to see the two accompanying fighters begin engaging the Britsh “not to worry Heinz, Klaus and Heinrich will take care of them”
Ivan continued to follow Klaus & Willi to the target but was falling behind after having to manoeuvre into position “goddamn I hate this crate” shouted Ivan in frustration.
Heinz had been keeping an eye on Heinrich on the right who was flying brilliantly and was out manoeuvring the two British he was engaged with “Heinrich’s doing a damn fine job tying up the British on our right Ivan” Heinz then took a quick look over to the left to see that Klaus von Klinkerhoffen was being tailed by a British camel “Klaus has got a tail Ivan get over there so I can shoot him!” Ivan heard Heinz’s words and moved closer to the British plane.
Once in range Heinz started to fire on the British plane causing some damage while Ivan continued to follow Klaus & Willi to the target “I set him on fire! I set him on fire” Ivan could hear Heniz chanting followed by “damn, he’s broken off” Ivan could see the Britsh plane trailing smoke braking off away from them “nice shooting Heniz” Ivan said cheerfully.
In front Klaus & Willi were engaged with a Britsh 2-seater near the target, lots of firing being traded but Klaus & Willi were staying on target. Ivan could hear desperation in Heinz voice as he expressed (graphically) his wishes for the plane to go faster.
Heinz checked again on Heinrich and could see that he was still engaged with one British plane but the other was heading towards the target, Klaus, now that he had lost his tail was making his way towards the British 2-seater.
“Klaus and Willi have done it Heinz!” shouted Ivan over the sound of the machine gun, Heinz was firing madly at different targets almost all planes in the battle were around the target “lets get the hell out of here” screamed Heinz in reply.
Ivan flew over the target then swung the plane around to come back the way they came “Oh my god! Klaus & Willi just collided with the British 2-seater Ivan… looks like there okay… DAMN so are the brits” Ivan was unable to look himself as he was busy avoiding the British planes.
Ivan heard Heinz opening up the machine gun yet again, Ivan had grown numb to the constant sound, “There coming in again Ivan” shouted Heinz. Ivan was aware of the British planes closing in but could do little to avoid them, bullets ripped through the canvas and hull and suddenly all sound stopped. It took Ivan a while to work out what the sudden lack of sound was, when it suddenly hit him “Heinz keep firing! Is it jammed? Heinz?” Ivan looked back to see Heinz unconscious, slumped in his seat and covered in blood… In a moment of panic Ivan forgot the controls and the plane steered wildly to the right Ivan regained control of the plane and put it back on course knowing he could do nothing for Heinz other than get him back to base.
Ivan saw in the distance Klaus and Heinrich heading back to base and Klaus & Willi were no where to be seen, more worrying to Ivan were the two British planes between him and home…
Ivan used his whole bags of tricks to avoid the British and after what seemed like an eternity and many new holes after Ivan had escaped the clutches of the British.

Waiting for the return of Ivan and Heniz
Klaus von Klinkerhoffen and Heinrich Mannover anxiously scan the skies for any sign of Ivan Schitter and Heinz Zoop, they had just landed after being forced to leave them behind because their fighters were running low on fuel. Klaus Kombat and Willi Fidler had made it back earlier after successfully completing the mission.
“There they are” shouts Klaus von Klinkerhoffen pointing at a distance object in the sky, all eyes turn to watch as Ivan pilots the plane closer and comes into land. “Looks in pretty bad shape Klaus” says Heinrich “at least they made it back in one piece, they were right in the thick of it and putting on a damn fine show” replies Klaus “that they were Klaus… that they were, did you see Heinz setting fire to that Camel? Damn fine shooting”.
Klaus and Heinrich continued to watch as Ivan finally got the plane onto the ground, they could see Ivan waving his hand “bit enthusiastic? Isn’t he” mentions Henirich whilst returning the wave, Klaus suddenly had a bad feeling “too enthusiastic… something’s wrong”
Shouts for medic suddenly erupt around the base, Klaus & Henirich make a dash towards the plane the medic staff doing the same. The medics arrive before them and they can see Ivan directing them to the observers compartment “damn Klaus looks like Heinz got shot up” shouts Heinrich. Once on the scene Klaus made his way over to a distraught Ivan “damn brits! We almost made it out in one piece” Ivan says in a broken voice “the medics will take care of him lad, you did a good job flying today, Heinz just caught a bit of bad luck that’s all”.
Later on in the evening amongst a sombre crowd Klaus announces that Heinz will live all though he will be out of action for a while. He spots Heinrich, Klaus Kombat and Willi across the room grabs himself a pint and joins them at their table, “where’s Ivan Klaus?” asks Willi “he’s still with Heinz… hasn’t left his side”.
