2nd Lieutenant Ronald Strut, 84 Squadron
Ron Strut wiped the oil from his goggles. He didn't mind the engine oil so much, that made up a small fraction of the smelly coating that covered his head and shoulders. It was that disgusting stuff that Bill put on his hair that stank to high heaven - you would have thought the leather flying helmet would stop it flying off, but obviously not.
This was proving to be a farce. They have been orbiting the airfield for hours, waiting for the German aircraft High Command had insisted would appear. Not a trace. Nothing.
Probably just as well they hadn't turned up; the RE8 was hardly a fighter.
And Bill's suggestion that they leave their socks off to save weight and improve performance seemed to be yet another cover for his lack of serviceable socks.
What on earth did he do with them...?
