"Ted's dead, baby, Ted's dead."

Dear Mrs. Cunterblast,

It is with the deepest regret that I must inform you of the death, in action, of your son Sgt. Edwin Cunterblast of 84 Sqn. Royal Air Force on 2nd August 1918.

As Sgt. Cunterblast's commanding officer may I give you my sincere condolences and those of the entire Squadron, Ted is greatly missed; he was a fine pilot and comrade. I hope it may give you some comfort to know that Ted gave his life with the utmost bravery in performing his duty against his country's enemy.

Both Ted and his observer Lt. H. Tosis were lost during a vital mission to bomb the German airfield at Peu d'Odeur. Ted's indomitable spirit and devotion to duty were shown to the highest degree during the mission as, with the utmost courage, he flew on to complete his attack on the enemy airfield despite his machine sustaining substantial damage from a collision with an enemy aircraft. Where many may have justifiably returned to base, Ted and Lt. Tosis flew on determinedly to complete their mission with considerable success. Sadly, their machine came under fire from a German aeroplane and both Ted and Lt. Tosis were killed instantly by the enemy's gunfire.

Yours sincerely,

Cpt. A.J. Hetherington.

Binky Ponders

Binky Hetherington threw down his flying helmet and goggles with venom as he leapt from the Se5, it's propellor barely stilled after landing. Reaching for a Capstan Full Strength, Binky stalked toward the Mess and the bottle of Infamous Grouse he knew would be there.

"Damn it! Damn it to Hell!" he cursed under his breath as he thought of the letters he would have to write later. He'd known that The Pink Baron von Klinkerhoffen's Jasta 69 would take some licking but today's loss of Ted and Harry hit him hard, hit the whole Squadron hard.

Binky supposed the Brass Hats would account the mission a success, Hun airfield in flames, two Boche crates downed but he couldn't rid himself of the sight of Ted's Brisfit torn apart by the hail of lead from that damned Albatross. Why had Ted continued with the bombing run after being pranged by the first Hun, why hadn't he seen that red Albatross? The Lord only knew. Still, Tempest had bagged one of the swine and by rights both the other Huns should have been decorating the French countryside. If only Gripham-Titely had shown more spunk Ted and Harry might be lifting a glass instead of lying in some Frog cornfield.

Binky had by now snatched up a big jigger of The Infamous, he cast a harrowing look around the now silent mess room and, silently swearing to see that red 'Tross burning all the way down, raised his glass.

"Ted and Harry!"

Nigel breathes a big sigh of relief

Nigel "Nancy" Gripham-Titely tried to keep his body from trembling as he handed his helmet and gloves to Corporal Nobby Spanner, the nearest mechanic. He wasn't the right man for this combat business. He'd managed to survive another fight by keeping clear of any trouble. For a second he felt guilty about the lack of support he'd given his comrades, especially Ted and Harry, but then, seeing a motorcycle by the hanger, his thoughts turned once again to deserting.

Walter Reflects

Walter Klozit steers his bruised & battered Albatros away from the recent battle, looking back, he can see Gunter Runhoff following a fair distance away. Today has not been a good day! Walter concentrates on trying to locate another airfield to keep the harrowing images of his fallen comrades from invading his thoughts, plenty of time and restless nights for that later…
